MRI Q&A

What is an MRI?

MRI is an advanced system creating detailed, high-quality images of the inside of your body using powerful magnets that target magnetic fields. These fields’ signals translate into images, allowing doctors to see the interior tissues and organs. MRIs are perfect for patients who need several scans in a short period.

Unlike CT (computed tomography) scans and X-rays, MRIs don’t use ionizing radiation, which can be harmful at high levels.

CT scans create high-quality images similar to MRIs but expose you to  radiation like  X-rays.  MRIs are radiation free.

Are MRIs safe?

MRIs are very safe. They’re radiation-free, so no health risks are involved, making MRI the safest imaging procedure for most patients.

One thing to be aware of is that the magnets inside an MRI machine are extremely sensitive to metals. Metals can heat up and malfunction when the MRI is on. Patients with embedded shrapnel fragments, permanent metal implant, or any other metal in their body may be unsuitable for an MRI, in which case an X-ray or CT scan might be a better choice.

LA MRI Center, Inc. uses the state-of-the-art Hitachi Airis II™ Open MRI. This award-winning machine delivers high-quality images without you needing to endure a traditional, enclosed procedure.

Why might I need an MRI?

MRIs are powerful diagnostic tools that give your provider exceptionally detailed pictures of your insides that they can use to identify and assess numerous conditions. Common diseases and injuries your provider might use an MRI to diagnose include:

  • Lower back injuries
  • Neck injuries
  • Torso injuries
  • Ankle issues
  • Feet fractures
  • ACL injuries
  • Tennis elbow
  • Torn meniscus
  • Rotator cuff tears

MRIs can identify problems such as knee, hand, and lower back injuries. Your provider can also evaluate disease progression after you begin treatment and assess how well you heal after surgery.
