I’m Nervous About Medical Imaging: What Can I Expect?

Nov 07, 2024
Feeling anxious before a medical imaging procedure, especially an MRI, is completely normal. Many of us feel uncertain about what to expect, but understanding the process can make it much easier.

At LA MRI Center Inc., in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, our team of expert medical imaging specialists knows that many people feel anxious the moment they set foot in a medical facility.

Because we understand this point of view, one of our main goals is to create a space where our patients feel comfortable and relaxed. There are two main ways we achieve this goal: state-of-the-art open MRI machines and thoughtful treatment of each patient.

We explain both of these things in this month’s blog as we take you through what to expect from your MRI.

Understanding MRIs

An MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce intricately detailed pictures from within your body. MRIs are radiation-free, unlike X-rays and CT scans.

The typical MRI experience involves lying flat on a table that slides into a large tube. During your MRI, it’s important to remain very still. Unfortunately, many people find that being in an enclosed space causes them to feel agitated and claustrophobic, making it particularly challenging to stay still.

That’s why we’ve embraced the most advanced MRI machines. We use the Hitachi Airis II™, a unique open MRI that doesn’t require you to stay inside a tube or tunnel during your imaging.

You lie flat on a table, but the space to your sides is open. With an open MRI, the magnets are above and below you. This enables us to get clear and precise images without triggering anxiety or panic in our patients.

The MRI process

When you arrive, we review your medical history and go through a checklist with you. Because an MRI machine contains powerful magnets, it’s important to make sure you’re not wearing anything magnetic.

You remove your clothing (including jewelry) and put on a comfortable gown for your MRI. During the MRI, you can communicate directly with our imaging specialists. You may hear some noises during your scan as the machine works, but it’s a painless process.

If you need to take a break at any point, just speak up and we can put a pause on your imaging for a few minutes. We also welcome our patients to bring a friend or loved one along for support.

It’s important to make sure you’re not wearing anything magnetic such as belts, bras with metals, zipper pants. You can expect your MRI to take around 20-30 minutes per exam area. At LA MRI Center Inc., we take your comfort seriously. Our experts ensure you have all the information and compassionate support you need to have a comfortable experience with us.
