Are you preparing for your first MRI? Feeling a bit nervous is completely normal, but understanding the process can help ease your mind. The team at  LA MRI Center Inc. in Los Angeles, CA, is here to help ensure you feel prepared when you come in for an MRI.

MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, allows your doctor to examine your tissues and bones in great detail without surgery. This advanced imaging technology helps them diagnose a range of conditions and health concerns.

The machine works by using a powerful magnetic field and low-energy radio waves. These temporarily align the hydrogen atoms in your body, and as they return to their original positions, they emit radio signals that the MRI machine captures to create detailed images.

What to Expect Before Your MRI

Here are a few key things to keep in mind before your appointment at LA MRI Center Inc.:

  • Avoid wearing jewelry or clothing with metal components like zippers, hooks, or buttons. Makeup may also need to be avoided.
  • You may be asked to change into a gown for the scan.

What to Expect During Your MRI

At LA MRI Center Inc., we use the Hitachi Airis II™ Open MRI, an award-winning machine that delivers high-quality images without the need for a traditional, enclosed procedure. This open MRI system provides a more comfortable experience, especially for those who feel anxious in tight spaces.

During the scan, you’ll lie on a comfortable table that slides into the open design of the Hitachi Airis II™ machine. Staying still is essential for clear images, and the technician may position you to ensure the scan captures exactly what your doctor needs to see. These positions are typically not uncomfortable.

Here’s what else to expect:

  • Scans last between 30-35 minutes for each body part.
  • While staying awake, you can close your eyes to relax.
  • The machine will make various bumps and noises.
  • You’ll communicate with the imaging technician throughout the scan.
  • You may be asked to hold your breath or take deep breaths at certain points.
  • If you feel panicked, you can request to stop the scan.

MRI Risks and Side Effects

For most people, MRI is a safe and effective procedure. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, it doesn’t involve radiation, and the imaging process itself is generally harmless.

However, there are a few considerations:

  • Metal implants: Those with metal implants like screws, pacemakers, or other devices face greater precautions for the MRI. LA MRI staff will guide you.
  • Pregnancy: MRI scans are typically not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The team at LA MRI Center Inc. is here to answer your questions and address any concerns to ensure your experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible. Ready to schedule your MRI? Call our office or request your appointment online today.
